On January 27, 2022, a federal judge rejected a $2.5 billion plea deal that Boeing had agreed to in 2020, in relation to the two crashes of its 737 Max aircraft.
The rejection came from U.S. District Judge Jorge L. Alonso in a 31-page ruling. Alonso argued that the agreement doesn’t comply with the mandatory restitution statute, nor does it adequately ensure accountability, requiring Boeing to conduct seven small gestures, such as establishing a memorial and writing
