According to a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has spent a total of nearly $29.4 million to investigate President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, and President-elect Joe Biden between October 2018 and July 2020.
Of that total, $23 million was spent investigating President Trump and $6.4 million was spent investigating Vice President Pence and President-elect Biden.
The Trump investigations, which include Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election, cost the DOJ an average of $720,000 per month during that period.
The Biden investigation, which was conducted by the DOJ’s Office of the Inspector General, cost an average of $200,000 per month.
The GAO noted that the investigations were necessary given the national importance of any potential presidential misconduct. But it also concluded that the DOJ should have done a better job of tracking and publicizing the total cost of the investigations.
