The Michigan Supreme Court has ruled that the Michigan Secretary of State must place Donald Trump’s name on the 2020 Republican Presidential Primary ballot in the state for the 2024 election. This ruling overturned a lower court decision that barred the former president from appearing on the ballot without proof of residence in the state. The ruling was reached by a 4-3 vote and was based on a technicality in the law which states that the Secretary of State “shall place the name of a person” who is entitled to an office on the relevant ballot. The court also held that the Secretary of State’s attempt to bar Trump was beyond her authority. The case was brought to the court by political activist Fred Wessels, who argued that the Secretary of State was improperly interpreting the law to exclude the former president from the ballot. Currently there is no indication that Donald Trump will make a bid for the White House in 2024.
