A new poll of potential Republican candidates for the 2024 US presidential primary has showed that Donald Trump continues to have a large lead over other contenders, while fellow former Governor Nikki Haley tied former Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for second place.
Trump leads the poll with a whopping 66 percent of GOP primary voters saying they’d pick him if the election were held today, with DeSantis and Haley each garnering 11 percent support. Former Vice President Mike Pence came in a distant fourth with 4 percent.
The survey, conducted by Morning Consult for POLITICO and The Conference Board, polled 1,945 GOP primary voters between January 14 and 17.
Trump has long been the frontrunner for the 2024 presidential primary, but his lead has only grown as he continues to deny that he lost the election and continues to insist that widespread voter fraud was to blame. DeSantis had previously been seen as his biggest rival, as the current Florida Governor has enjoyed a surge in popularity among GOP primary voters over the past several months.
However, the poll shows that Haley has emerged as a potential challenger, as the former South Carolina Governor has seen a steady rise in her support. She recently announced that she would be exploring a possible presidential run in 2024.
The poll also showed that Republican voters are still largely supportive of Trump’s presidency, with 70 percent approving of his job performance over the last four years. Just 26 percent said they disapproved of his job performance.
