The Colorado Supreme Court has ruled that former President Donald Trump is barred from being on the state’s presidential primary ballot in 2024. The court said that the state has the right to adopt election laws that “ensure integrity and public confidence” in its elections. The decision comes after the state passed a law in 2020 requiring presidential candidates to hand in a sworn statement saying they have not been involved in any illegal activities in the past ten years. Trump’s lawyers argued that the law was unconstitutional and “unnecessarily restrictive” but the court disagreed and ruled that the state has discretion when it comes to setting eligibility requirements for presidential elections. The ruling means that Trump will not be able to have his name on the Colorado ballot if he chooses to run for president again in 2024.
