An ex-employee of the Jacksonville Jaguars NFL team in Jacksonville, Florida has been charged with stealing more than $22 million from the team for a luxury shopping spree. The employee, who is identified as Timothy Mingey, was arrested and charged with embezzlement last weekend.
According to court documents, Mingey was employed as the Jaguars’ Director of Security from 2008 until 2017. During that time, he allegedly stole millions of dollars from the Jaguars and used the money to fund his luxury lifestyle, including a $40K Rolex watch, a $46k vacation trip, and thousands of dollars of fine furnishings and clothes.
According to the US Attorney’s Office, Mingey “used his position of trust and authority” to access the Jaguars’ bank accounts and write fraudulent checks to himself and his family members. The stolen funds were allegedly used to pay for lavish trips and designer clothes, among other luxury items.
In addition to embezzling from the Jaguars, Mingey was also charged with filing false tax returns. He allegedly failed to report more than $5 million of his income to the IRS over a period of several years.
If convicted of all charges, Mingey faces up to 20 years in federal prison.
