The United Auto Workers union said on Saturday that its members had officially ratified the new labor contract negotiated with General Motors Co.
The UAW said the contract received 63 percent support from the nearly 52,000 UAW members who voted on it, with nearly 61 percent voting in favor. The ratification follows weeks of intense negotiations between the union and the automaker.
“After weeks of hard work at the bargaining table and days of intense voting at the sites, members of the UAW chose to ratify the new four-year labor agreement with General Motors,” said UAW President Dennis Williams in a statement.
The agreement is considered a win for the union, which fought hard for maintaining job security, higher wages, more health care renegotiations and improved work conditions for employees. The deal also includes substantial investment in new products and $2 billion in bonus payments for workers.
The contract will remain in place until at least September 2019, at which point it can be reopened for negotiations.
