The GOP’s rewriting of the January 6th Capitol insurrection has allowed for the former President Donald Trump to re-emerge as a political figure in the Republican party. By shifting the narrative from the Capitol attack being a direct result of Trump’s rhetoric to one of outside agitators, the GOP has been able to weather the storm and look to the future. Furthermore, the thinly-veiled support of the former president by GOP officials such as Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy has allowed for Trump to remain politically relevant, as evidenced by his recent speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference. This increased support has allowed for Trump to slowly begin to make his way back into the Republican fold, which ultimately could have catastrophic consequences for the party in the long-term.
