In April 2015, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that engine maker Navistar International Corporation was facing the largest-ever Clean Air Act penalty of $179 million for allegedly cheating on emissions test results. The penalty covers three years of alleged Clean Air Act violations from 2010 to 2013 and is the largest civil penalty proposed ever by the EPA. Navistar is accused of using illegal software in its diesel engines to in order to pass the emissions test despite the fact that the engines actually emitted far more nitrogen oxides than allowed. Navistar has since stated that it disagrees with the EPA’s assertions and will continue to fight the accusations in court.
