Conservatives across the nation have heavily criticized President Donald Trump after he attacked Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) and called for him to face a primary challenge.
Rep. Roy, a staunch fiscal conservative and Tea Party loyalist, voted against a recent $1.3 trillion spending bill. Trump publicly criticized Roy for his vote, tweeting that he should be “challenged and replaced.”
Many prominent figures and organizations within the conservative movement responded swiftly to Trump’s attacks on Rep. Roy. National Review editor-in-chief Rich Lowry called the Trump tweet “idiotic” and “contrary to the core of conservatism.” Trump also received criticism from Club for Growth, which called Trump’s open call for a primary challenge “not quite right.”
Other prominent conservatives such as Erick Erickson and Jonah Goldberg have also spoken out against Trump’s actions. Hundreds of conservatives across the nation have also taken to social media to express their displeasure with the president’s comments.
Given the strong and unified conservative response to Trump’s criticism of Rep. Roy, it remains to be seen if Trump will double down on his initial criticisms or back off in the near future.
